Best of the World – National Geographic
Must-See Places for 2013
That’s the recognition Quito, capital of Ecuador, received last night (November 26th, 2012) by the National Geographic Traveler magazine. The award ceremony occurred during the opening of the 2nd Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (II Bolsa de Turismo Sostenible), organized by the Rainforest Alliance.
The event was held at the Eugenio Espejo Convention Center, north of downtown Quito.
Adelina Carpente, representative of National Geographic, presented the award to the Quito councilman, Paul Ponce, who received it on behalf of the capital. In an emotional tone, Carpenter said that for her it “is a double pleasure to be in Quito” and the Traveler editors appointed to deliver this recognition. She added that “National Geographic was proud to put their seal of approval so that many more people come to this city.”
The National Geographic Traveler magazine has devoted two full pages to discuss Quito as one of the recommended destinations to visit in the next year. This publication is in the December-January edition, which circulates in the United States, with a circulation of 175,000 copies.
After receiving the plaque, Ponce said that “is a great honor to be among the top destinations. But there is a dual responsibility to the various bodies and sectors related to tourism and other related activities”.
In the coming weeks, I will be presenting some unique angles, aspects and key attractions of Quito for my readers – or better yet, come down and visit us in person!
